Boaters Urged to Follow Public Health Measures as Pottahawk Weekend Approaches

NORFOLK COUNTY – The Ontario Provincial Police is urging those planning to attend the annual Pottahawk party on Lake Erie this Sunday to make safety a priority.

Norfolk County OPP all boats attending Pottahawk to anchor boats at least two meters apart to adhere to social distancing guidelines, as well as to adhere to a social circle of not more than ten people. Also, OPP is asking vessel operators to refrain from picking up strangers looking for a ride.

Officers in uniform and plainclothes will be at marinas working with the owners to ensure public safety both on and off the water and enforcing necessary laws.

The OPP says every year, emergency services respond to numerous injuries and impaired boaters during the Pottahawk party weekend.  The majority of incidents involve alcohol, and in some cases, people left stranded without a ride back to shore.

Police will also be conducting random checks throughout the day for sobriety and to ensure all safety equipment is on board.

OPP will also be patrolling the area highways and secondary roads to promote motorist’s safety.
