Most families are now preparing for the annual “back-to-school” routine including picking up needed supplies for the season. A special program, provided by the Brantford Foodbank and volunteers from Westervelt College, means low income families within the area will have the same access to supplies needed. The Back Pack Program provides elementary students with brand new backpacks loaded with essential tools.
Cindy Oliver, Manager of the Brantford Foodbank, says this is a program that has been in place for over a decade but an increased need this year is proving to be a challenge. Oliver adds, last year 260 backpacks were distributed.
“There’s been some other programs that aren’t coming through as expected, so we’re trying to pick up a little bit of the slack and we’re doing at least 50 more than we did last year, plus our wait list is another 50.”Cindy Oliver, Brantford Foodbank Manager
Volunteers spent two days sorting and packing the donated packs for pick-up Wednesday.
