Secondary schools within the Grand Erie District School Board (GEDSB) will be closed this Wednesday, December 4th. The school board released the statement regarding closure Friday in the wake of a planned walk-out by teachers.
The Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF) has announced they will escalate job action in the form of the one-day, province-wide strike if a new agreement is not reached by then.
“Grand Erie remains hopeful that an agreement with OSSTF can be reached soon. In the meantime, we want to thank our students and families for their continued patience and understanding during these uncertain times.”Greg Anderson, Chair of the Grand Erie District School Board
The walkout follows six days of information pickets and a limited withdrawal of administrative services that began Tuesday.
Education Minister Stephen Lecce describes the escalated action as “troubling” and that the union is turning its back on children and compromising their education.
The proposed walkout by members of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF) would have no impact on elementary schools whose teaching staff are part of the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO).
The GEDSB says all schools will re-open to students on December 5th following the one-day strike.
