Skeletal Remains Were ‘Historic’ and Likely Came from Cemetery Land Erosion

On Saturday, June 22, 2019, at approximately 7:22 p.m., OPP received a report of found human remains in Lake Erie near Pottahawk Point (between Long Point and Turkey Point).

Boaters anchored there observed what appeared to be human skeletal remains in the water and contacted police.

On Tuesday, June 25, 2019, the OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit conducted an extensive search on the immediate and surrounding area.

Investigators did not find further remains.

After a thorough examination by a forensic anthropologist, it has been determined that the located human remains will not be part of a criminal investigation and have been determined to be historic in nature.

The remains have been reported to the cemeteries registrar and will not involve a coroner or any further police investigation.
