Tent City Residents to Vacate Peacefully

Residents of Brantford’s largest homeless tent encampment off Sherwood drive are packing up and moving on. Resident, Danny Roberts says, they have decided to move voluntarily after the city warned they would dismantle and clean up their site with police presence. Roberts says, they plan to vacate Wednesday night.

“We just wanna get along with everybody. We’re gonna try and set an example and just leave. We’re gonna clean-up and not gonna leave a mess behind.”

Susan Evenden, Brantford’s Director of Social Assistance and Homelessness, says all current city protocol was followed in dealing with this encampment site.

“I can confirm that outreach services have been provided to individuals at active encampments in our community. Outreach staff are working closely with individuals involved and have communicated that other arrangements can be coordinated before enforcement takes place. Every effort is made for individuals to vacate the site voluntarily with a support plan in place.”

While most residents at the Sherwood Drive site have cooperated with the city staff, they also say, they refuse to move to a city shelter.
