Paris. French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal was elected yesterday as the leader of the parliamentary group of President Emmanuel Macron’s party, following early legislative elections that left the country in suspense after the victory of the left, but which failed to achieve an absolute majority.
Macron dissolved the National Assembly and called early elections after the French far-right won the European elections on June 9. After the opposition won, Attal, 35, resigned, but Macron asked him to continue in his role. for now for ensure stability France, which will host the Olympic Games from 26 July.
Attal ran as the sole candidate for the party leader election and won 84 of the 98 votes of his fellow party members from the Renaissance party, which was hit hard by Macron’s decision to call early elections.
Attal will take over as party leader at the opening session of the new legislature on Thursday, and the current government must have declared its resignation by then. In the early legislative elections, no party or coalition won an absolute majority of 289 deputies. The New Popular Front (NFP), an alliance that includes environmentalists, socialists, communists and the radical left, came out on top with 193 seats; Macron’s centre-right alliance won 164 and the far right won 143 of the 577 seats in the assembly.
Macron, who has three years left in his term, has the constitutional task of appointing the prime minister, but whoever he chooses as head of government must have enough support in the Assembly to survive a vote of no confidence.
The NFP, which is the largest party in parliament and is demanding the post of prime minister, on Friday proposed Huguette Bello, 73, leader of the For Reunion party and president of the Regional Council of Reunion Island, a French territory in the Indian Ocean.
After five days of negotiations in search of a consensus within the NFP, Bello obtained the support of three parties in the coalition: La France Insoumise (LFI), the Greens (LV) and the French Communist Party (PCF), but he came up against the desire of the Socialist Party (PS) to promote its leader, Olivier Faure.
The PS called for negotiations to continue in order to find a consensus. No name generates consensus among us so far.said the party’s secretary general, Pierre Jouvet. Bello has a long political career in her favour, having been a deputy for 23 years as a representative of the communists. The head of the Communist Party, Fabien Roussel, said that Bello has wood to be prime minister because knows what it is like to sit in Parliament and build majorities.
